☆ Childhood → May was born to Italian immigrants in Brooklyn, New York. The family didn't have much in the way of money or material possessions, but there was a lot of love. May's parents instilled the concept of "family first" in May and also brought her up to be a hard-working, strong woman who could survive on her own two feet. They were a bit "radical" for their time in the regard they taught their daughter to support herself and raised May to value education.
☆ College → May attended Hunter College in New York City where she majored in Communication Studies. She was a serious student, but also enjoyed going on dates and attending parties with her friends. She also started volunteering for the Salvation Army during this time.
☆ Marriage → May met Ben after his stint in the Army concluded. They married with dreams of having a family; alas, they would soon discover they could not bear children together. The news rattled the young couple, but they got on with their lives after mourning the loss of what could have been for them. May began working for the Salvation Army Headquarters while Ben worked various part-time jobs after retiring from the army.
☆ Raising Peter Parker → May and Ben were shocked when they learned Ben's brother and sister-in-law were killed in an accident, leaving young Peter in their care. May already loved her nephew, but quickly took on the role of his bonus mom.
☆ Ben's Death → May faced more loss when a petty thief killed Ben. She suddenly found herself a single parent of a pre-teen boy, which was daunting to the woman. Could she be mother, father, aunt, and uncle all at once? Still, she was determined to keep going for Peter.
☆ Peter is Spider-Man → May was shocked to learn her nephew is Spider-Man. Her instinct was to forbid him from going out, but she knew he'd just resent her so she allowed it with some ground rules.
☆ The Blip → May fell victim to Thanos' snap, just like her nephew, and was brought back five years later. The time loss obviously affected her, but she had Peter to worry about and quickly moved to get a job, a new apartment, and even set up a charity for those misplaced by the blip.
PERSONALITY
May's parents instilled determination and independence into her at a young age. They were ahead of their time in wanting their only daughter to stand on her own two feet. May, for this reason, grew into a studious woman with a ferocious appetite for reading.
May is witty, which is often seen in her playful banter with her only nephew, Peter Parker. She has a sharp sense of sarcasm and playful demeanor that keeps people on their toes. She has been through much in life so she knows to appreciate each moment and not take herself too seriously.
May is strong, resilient, and hard-working. She was dealt an early blow by the deaths of her parents, but she weathered her loss in the way she knew would make them most proud, i.e. by keeping her head high and going on with her life. These skills would later benefit her with raising her nephew as a single mother after her husband's murder; moreover, she brings these skills to her managerial job at the Salvation Army.
May has deep abandonment issues. She lost much in her life and is worried about losing the one person she has left, her nephew, Peter. May, for this reason, often worries about not only Peter, but his friends and her co-workers. She always wants to make sure they are taken care of and feel safe and loved. She can be smothering in this regard. She also makes it hard for other people to take care of her.
She is not quick to anger, but once fury is ignited, she'll let you know that you ticked her off.
